On April 12th the Fusion: Art. Science. Technology series presents its first speaker at Community Hall, Cupertino, 1-3 pm. Families are welcome and there is no charge. The first seminar, with speaker Geoffrey Doyle, will highlight the history of 3-D printing, types of technology, and how it is changing lives.

Doyle is CEO of GrowShapes LLC (, which provides leading-edge 3D printing and scanning products and services in Silicon Valley. He started his career in the British Army (Royal Engineers), and transitioned into venture capital and worked at Percipient Capital in London for over 10 years, investing in UK technology companies. After moving to Silicon Valley he established SVForum’s 3D Printing and Scanning Special Interest Group at the beginning of 2013, the first monthly meeting forum for 3D printing-related technology in Silicon Valley.


He is also a business advisor to Silicon Valley companies, such as Sixense Entertainment (, and a frequent speaker on the topic of 3D printing investments and technology trends. Geoffrey holds a B.Eng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering from University of Manchester (UK), an MBA from Manchester Business School (UK) and graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.


“3D technology is moving so fast,” notes Kiran Kundargi, Cupertino Library Foundation board member, and facilitator of this series, “it is now being used with innovators like Google and Nestle, which makes KitKat chocolates. In 2013, along with the announcement of Google’s Android KitKat, Nestle wanted to recognize South Africa with a ‘Chocnology’ exhibition. Nestle commissioned 10 of South Africa’s hottest creative talent to design original sculptures made entirely out of chocolate – 3D printed chocolate. Quite amazing.”


“The coming together of two very different worlds – chocolate and technology – inspired the idea of creating chocolate artwork made possible through the use of innovative technology,” says Kevin Corlett, Business Executive Manager, Chocolates at Nestlé.


In essence, all designs were created using the Android operating system and freely available online 3D modelling tools. To produce the artwork, a 3D printer that traditionally uses a plastic-based filament was manipulated to use chocolate as its raw material, allowing the creation of intricate, three-dimensional sculptures.

The second seminar in the Fusion series is June 21st, also from 1-3 pm in Cupertino Community Hall. ‘Prototype your idea, yourself’ will explore the shift in the 3D printing industry from engineers to hobbyists and young, budding engineers who want to create their own advance prototypes.


The speaker for June 21st is entrepreneur and inventor Robert Bigler who has made a career of designing and using Rapid Prototyping technologies. He founded and recently sold a global automation company called Animatics and is now CEO of Equalia, a technological incubation company for multiple initiatives, including Personal Electric Vehicles.


Design tools have become easy to learn and affordable, while 3-D Printers and other Rapid Prototyping resources are turning fabrication itself into affordable “point-and-click”.


Bigler will walk attendees through the steps for an individual to prototype an idea.
